HI JS,

Thanks for your comment. Backlinks are, in my opinion, one of the key factors in getting to the top of the search engines. Clearly it is not the only aspect of SEO, but without backlinks your site will struggle, especially against high-competition keyword phrases.

The cons of backlinks. The main con of backlinks is not the backlinks themselves, but rather the manner and velocity of the backlinks. For example, you may have seen blog spammers or forum spammers which are created by bot software. If your website didn't have any backlinks at all and then all of a sudden had 10000 backlinks all from blogs then this would look suspicious to Google and the other search engines and your website may be penalised.

Building steady backlinks, to a variety of web pages within your site, as well as a variety of keywords, from a wide variety of sources - that is natural and beneficial link building. We advocate ongoing steady link building which may take longer to create a #1 ranking for your keywords (depending on the keyword) but will be long lasting backlinks to your website.

I hope that helps. If you have any other questions please let me know. :)

There is always pros & cons to most things.
